Super-Herbie and Marauder the snake

Do you remember that in the previous book, “Super-Herbie and Clever the fox”, I had already told you about Marauder the snake? Well, in this book I’m going to tell you a story about him.

After that Herbie, all green like the grass, made the fox run away from the henhouse, thanks to the help of Blackie the rooster, Clever the fox, with a thick orange and white tail, all curled up moustache, packed up and moved to a quieter territory.

He had been beaten up many times by Blackie, so, tired of that behaviour, he grabbed a big cloth napkin, put everything he had in it, folded it like a bag, put it on his shoulder and left.

Since then, the henhouse had a long period of tranquility.

Until Marauder the snake came back from the long therapeutic holidays at the spa to which he had been obliged to by the disastrous results of the last fight he had with Blackie the rooster.

He had been missing for so long that the very thought of the henhouse made his mouth watery.

He was thinking about a plan to steal those scrumptious eggs and to do it, he had been moving around the henhouse for days.

He needed a foolproof plan to steal the eggs without risking being seen again by Blackie.

He didn’t even want to face the hens again as he still remembered the bruises they caused him when he’d tried to steal again.

The fact is that when it comes down to protecting their chicks, hens become extremely dangerous, not to mention all that squawking and flapping their wings to attract Blackie’s attention, his beak and his gigantic talons with horrible consequences: he didn’t have any intention to go see the doctor that soon.

Marauder the snake knew far too well that he needed to enter the henhouse quietly and with an expedient.

Meanwhile, life at the henhouse was going smoothly and the chicks were growing up.

One fine morning, on the awakening, the chicks found a special breakfast: a half chocolate half cream cob.

- Mmh… I wonder which Chicken-chef has cooked this goodness - said a chick.

- It must have been Chicksey - said the bespectacled one.

- Whoever did this, he must have taken part in Master Chick-chef - remarked Ponchio.

When the chicks had finished discussing about breakfast and had washed themselves in the usual aluminium pot ran by the brooding hen, Blackie the rooster arrived.
