About the book

The story, set in London's high society, begins in the ballroom of Brabazon House where the season's debutantes are on display as they dance with various suitors. Among the crowd is a man called Travers Nugent, who though apparently wealthy, actually «lived upon his wits.» He is presently earning a living by serving an Indian Maharajah, who has designs to marry one of the prettiest debutantes, Miss Maynard. In this way, the three principal characters of the story are introduced. Headon Hill was a prolific novelist who wrote stories that were full of intrigue, event, and mystery, and this one promises not to disappoint.
