How to Get Rid of Obsessive Thoughts and Anxiety

About the podcast

**How to Get Rid of Obsessive Thoughts and Anxiety**

Stress is something we all face. We live in a world where even the simple use of a mobile phone can send our nervous systems into overdrive.

Beyond that, our sensory perceptions, work demands, interactions with colleagues and family, unexpected events, personal traumas, and ingrained beliefs—all can trigger feelings of anxiety. There’s a common thread linking obsessive thoughts: our relationships. Be it between men and women, children and parents, or colleagues.

So how can we break free from anxiety?

Many attempt to distract themselves by binge-watching movies, reading books, consuming alcohol, or spending endless hours online. However, these methods are merely temporary fixes and, ultimately, ineffective.

Our bodies are designed to help us manage anxiety. With about 90 billion neurons in our brains, around two-thirds are dedicated to movement functions—walking, gesturing, running, and more. The remaining third handles everything else.

When you experience anxiety, this portion of neural connections begins to take up a significant amount of energy. This energy is consumed as your brain strives to interact, manage stress, and navigate those obsessive thoughts.

**What can you do?** Shift your focus to the two-thirds of neurons responsible for movement. As soon as those intrusive thoughts arise, engage in physical activity.

This can be brisk walking, running, swimming, or working out at the gym—as long as it’s appropriate for your health. You can also incorporate simple movements like squats or taking the stairs.

By redirecting your focus towards movement, you naturally stimulate the production of dopamine and anandamide (our body's natural counterpart to cannabis). The energy you would have spent battling intrusive thoughts transforms into fueling the neural connections that govern movement.

Moreover, when your body is active, you release hormones that promote stability. Physical activity triggers the release of happiness and joy hormones, leading to improved sleep patterns and providing you with more energy for the day ahead.

Understanding this mechanism is crucial. It can save you time and emotional energy by steering you away from ineffective strategies for managing obsessive thoughts.

As an experiment, consciously switch from mental ruminations to physical activity.

To live a happy life, it's essential to understand how our brains and bodies work. I explore these concepts in-depth in my exclusive online intensives and programs. Click the link to register and embark on your journey towards psychological well-being and personal happiness.
