Rutherford was a pseudonym for White which allowed him to share some of his more intimate thoughts through his writing that he wouldn't be able to express due to his position as an English civil servant. In this book, he narrates the story of a woman, Ellen, a mother and wife, who is, against all odds, trying to find a place in life in a world that's incredibly difficult to navigate.
