This is a psychological novel that revolves around Edward Clifford, who was orphaned at a young age and raised by his aunt and uncle in Charleston. Despite a challenging upbringing, Clifford becomes a successful lawyer and marries his cousin, Julia. However, his emotional scars and mistrust of human relationships lead him to become jealous of Julia's friendship with his childhood friend, William Edgerton.
