About the book

"Camp, Court and Siege…" is the memoir of personal adventure and observation during two wars in the late 19th century, by American diplomat, Wickham Hoffman. Hoffman served as a Union soldier during the American Civil War. He was later appointed, among other duties, the Secretary of Legation at the American Embassy in France. He was the Chargé d'affaires at the onset of the Franco-Prussian War when France mobilized its army on 15 July 1870, leading the North German Confederation to respond with its own mobilization later that day.
