The word economy comes from the Greek word oikonomos, which means “one who manages a household.” At first, this origin might seem peculiar. But in fact, households and economies have much in common.

A household faces many decisions. It must decide which members of the household do which tasks and what each member gets in return: Who cooks dinner? Who does the laundry? Who gets the extra dessert at dinner? Who gets to choose what TV show to watch? In short, the household must allocate its scarce resources among its various members, taking into account each member’s abilities, efforts, and desires.

Like a household, a society faces many decisions. A society must find some way to decide what jobs will be done and who will do them. It needs some people to grow food, other people to make clothing, and still others to design computer software. Once society has allocated people (as well as land, buildings, and machines) to various jobs, it must also allocate the output of goods and services they produce. It must decide who will eat caviar and who will eat potatoes. It must decide who will drive a Ferrari and who will take the bus. The management of society’s resources is important because resources are scarce.

Scarcity means that society has limited resources and therefore cannot produce all the goods and services people wish to have. Just as each member of a household cannot get everything he or she wants, each individual in a society cannot attain the highest standard of living to which he or she might aspire.

Economics is the study of how society manages its scarce resources. In most societies, resources are allocated not by an all-powerful dictator but through the combined actions of millions of households and firms. Economists therefore study how people make decisions: how much they work, what they buy, how much they save, and how they invest their savings. Economists also study how people interact with one another. For instance, they examine how the multitude of buyers and sellers of a good together determine the price at which the good is sold and the quantity that is sold. Finally, economists analyze forces and trends that affect the economy as a whole, including the growth in average income, the fraction of the population that cannot find work, and the rate at which prices are rising. The study of economics has many facets, but it is unified by several central ideas.

***

To understand why people choose to depend on others for goods and services and how this choice improves their lives, let’s look at a simple economy. Imagine that there are two goods in the world: meat and potatoes. And there are two people in the world – a cattle rancher and a potato farmer – each of whom would like to eat both meat and potatoes.

The gains from trade are most obvious if the rancher can produce only meat and the farmer can produce only potatoes. In one scenario, the rancher and the farmer could choose to have nothing to do with each other. But after several months of eating beef roasted, boiled, broiled, and grilled, the rancher might decide that self-sufficiency is not all it’s cracked up to be. The farmer, who has been eating potatoes mashed, fried, baked, and scalloped, would likely agree. It is easy to see that trade would allow them to enjoy greater variety: Each could then have a steak with a baked potato or a burger with fries.

Although this scene illustrates most simply how everyone can benefit from trade, the gains would be similar if the rancher and the farmer were each capable of producing the other good, but only at great cost. Suppose, for example, that the potato farmer is able to raise cattle and produce meat, but that he is not very good at it. Similarly, suppose that the cattle rancher is able to grow potatoes but that her land is not very well suited for it. In this case, the farmer and the rancher can each benefit by specializing in what he or she does best and then trading with the other.

9. Give a written translation of the following extracts from Russian into English:

Some Signs the Economy Is Improving by Ed Grabianowski

Although some economists declared the most recent recession over in June 2009, the mortgage crisis, fluctuating gas prices, a shaky stock market and other complex economic issues continue to drag down both the U.S. and global economies. The beginning of 2011, however, has shown market watchers signs of hope. Commercial sales are on the rise and unemployment is somewhat down.

Economists and financial analysts can predict some of these market fluctuations, but the economy is like an incredibly complex machine that’s missing the owner's manual. There are so many variables and factors affecting the deeply interconnected web of worldwide economies that even the most experienced economist can only take educated attempts at fiscal prognostication. Instead of reading tea leaves or looking for signs in the stars, we can look for evidence of real economic recovery. Here are 10 signs that the U.S. economy is gaining back the ground it lost during the recession.

Rise in Expensive Equipment Sales

Any sales increase is a positive sign for the economy, but sales of high-end equipment are especially important. In the technology sector, large servers and other expensive electronic equipment have increased. The purchase of spe-cialized medical testing equipment by hospitals and labs has also increased from the end of 2010 through early 2011.

These kinds of sales increases are important not only because they show that companies have enough financial confidence to make major purchases, but also because they represent a major increase in overall economic activity. The companies that produce this expensive equipment have new orders that can allow them to expand, or at least rehire workers laid off during the downturn. The purchasers have new revenue streams as more customers use their new equipment.

Where did the data on these increased purchases come from? From the companies likeliest to notice: specialty shipping firms. An MRI machine or a huge generator that maintains power flow to a server farm can’t just be loaded into a moving van – they must be carefully packed and transported by experts to avoid damage. The specialty shipping industry is showing a lot of confidence in large-scale industrial transportation in 2011 [source: PRWeb]. Other reports indicate 0.9 percent growth in the manufacturing of business equipment, computers and semiconductors [source: Chandra & Kowalski].

Housing Prices No Longer in Freefall

According to the Brookings Institution, in the third quarter of 2010, housing prices rose in 80 of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., and rose 0.6 percent overall among those 100 cities. While the gain is small, it's significant because each of those 100 cities had experienced a decline in housing prices for the previous three quarters [source: Wial & Shearer].

Housing prices are an important indicator of economic recovery in general because, for most Americans, the majority of their wealth is tied to the value of their home. It may be an even more important as a sign of recovery right now because the Great Recession is so closely linked to a collapse in the housing market.

Advertising Sales Are Growing

A lot of our economy is tied to advertising. Look at magazines, television, professional sports, local newspapers, Internet sites and the like: We often take for granted that these things are primarily funded by advertising. In 2009, advertising spending in the U.S. fell 7 percent and grew just 1.5 percent in 2010. When advertising spending slows, it cripples a huge chunk of the economy.

The advertising industry is not expecting a miraculous turnaround, but analysts predict a 2.5 percent increase in U.S. advertising sales in 2011 – which is certainly an improvement – and 9 percent growth through 2013. While it’s not spectacular growth, it a whole lot better than a decline [source: McClellan].

Factory Production is Increasing

Manufacturing makes up roughly 13 percent of the U.S. economy. That's significant, but in some nations, manufacturing represents 20 percent or more of the total gross domestic product (GDP) [source: U.N.]. Gains and losses in manufacturing can often be felt more keenly than even these numbers would suggest, since a shuttered factory can cripple the economy of an entire city or region. Ask the citizens of Detroit.

With that in mind, news that the Ford Motor Company plans to increase factory production by 13 percent in response to a 27 percent increase in the number of individual buyers in January of 2011 is a very good sign for the economy [source: Krisher]. General Motors also reported record profits in 2010 as well [source: Bunkley].The big picture looks rosy as well: In mid-February, the Federal Reserve reported a 0.3 percent increase in U.S. manufacturing output.

improve + Adv.: improve considerably, dramatically, greatly, immeasurably, materially, radically, significantly, substantially, vastly, markedly, noticeably, marginally, slightly, rapidly, steadily.

Verb + improve: continue to improve over the weekend, strive to improve, try to improve their working conditions, help to improve, be designed to improve.

Phrases with improve: aimed at improving sth, measures aimed at improving government efficiency, an attempt/effort to improve sth, an incentive to improve sth, much improved service to the customers.

11. Give a written translation of the following extracts from Russian into English:

• недостаточен для удовлетворения потребностей людей в полной мере;

• может быть увеличен лишь путем дополнительных затрат;

9. Give a written translation of the following extracts from English into Russian:

1. Economic development ideally refers to the sustained, concerted actions of communities and policymakers that improve the standard of living and economic health of a specific locality. The definition of economic development given by Professor Michael Todaro is an increase in living conditions, improvement of the citizens self-esteem needs and free and a just society. He suggests that the most accurate method of measuring economic development is the Human Development Index which takes into account the literacy rates & life expectancy which in-turn has an outright impact on productivity and could lead to Economic Growth. However, economic development can also be measured by taking into account the GDI (gender related index).

2. Economic development can also be referred to as the quantitative and qualitative changes in an existing economy. Economic development involves development of human capital, increasing the literacy ratio, improve important infrastructure, improvement of health and safety and others areas that aims at increasing the general welfare of the citizens. The terms economic development and economic growth are used interchangeably but there is a very big difference between the two.

3. Economic growth can be viewed as a sub category of economic development. Economic development is a government policy to increase the economic, social welfare and ensuring a stable political environment. Economic growth on the other hand is the general increase in the country products and services output.

4. Economic development will only be successful if the whole nation is willing to give their best efforts towards its achievement. A lot of theories have been forwarded by different schools of thought about how economic development should be achieved. Many economists have suggested that each country should try to achieve modernization and industrialization in order to achieve economic development.

1) экономическому росту страны в долгосрочной перспективе. Инновации вышли на первый план еще в рамках индустриального общества. К началу эры постиндустриального и информационного общества инновации прочно заняли место основного генератора экономического роста любой страны. Инновации воздействуют на все стороны жизнедеятельности общества, в том числе и на экономическую ее составляющую;

2) созданию новых отраслей экономики. По глубине вносимых изменений инновации могут быть радикальными (т.е. предлагающими кардинально новый продукт или услугу, путь решения проблемы и т.д.) и улучшающими (т.е. совершенствующими уже существующий продукт, услугу и т.д.). Развитию новых отраслей экономики способствуют радикальные инновации. Радикальные инновации в долгосрочной перспективе приводят к тому, что новые отрасли не только появляются, но и постепенно становятся доминирующими;

3) созданию единого рыночного пространства. В современном обществе, которое так или иначе идет по пути глобализации, даже одна инновация может способствовать созданию единого рынка. Наиболее характерным примером здесь может являться создание сети Интернет, в частности – появление интернет-магазинов, покупки в которых можно совершать, находясь практически в любой стране мира. Таким образом, создается единый рынок, границы которого не поддаются измерению;

4) стимулированию конкуренции и повышению конкурентоспособности отдельного физического лица, организации, страны. Джоном А. Гобсоном было высказано мнение, что действительное конкурентное преимущество заключается в способности находить новые рынки, производить новые товары и изобретать новые способы изготовления товаров. Если фирма обладает инновацией, которая пользуется спросом на рынке, то, безусловно, это будет являться ее конкурентным преимуществом как минимум до момента, пока организации-конкуренты не создадут аналог инновации или пока не иссякнет спрос на эту инновацию. Как известно, фирма, обладающая конкурентным преимуществом, при прочих равных условиях имеет возможность получить высокую прибыль или даже сверхприбыль за счет создания естественной монополии. Другие организации, действующие в том же или смежном сегменте рынка, что и компания, обладающая инновацией, вступят в конкурентную борьбу и будут стремиться «разрушить» образовавшуюся естественную монополию, прежде всего, путем разработки различных инновационных идей. Очевидно, что конкуренция возрастает, что благотворно сказывается на конъюнктуре рынка в целом;

5) взаимопроникновению культур и экономик разных стран. Инновации, применяемые в многочисленных областях жизнедеятельности общества, способствуют интеграции общества;

Institute for Economics and Peace,

1. There seems to be a lot of correlation between economic growth and human development. This can be explained by a simple example in an economy. We shall consider economic growth as a prerequisite for economic development. Assume we have a household in an economy that ekes their livelihood from a horticultural firm. Economic growth will bring business opportunities to the country and the effects spills over to all sectors of the economy. The firm will increase its profits which will in turn be used to pay for their generation education, improve the access to health care for that family and will increase the general living standard of the family. If this effect is replicated in each household overall economic development will be achieved.

2. Economic development leads to improvements in many sectors of a nation. There are a variety of indicators that economist use to measure the level of economic development in a country. The indicators are: declining poverty rates, increasing literacy rates, declining infant morbidity and increasing life expectancy. Economic development has to be supported by the whole nation from economists, politicians, and also civilians. Thus it can be concluded that, economic development leads to the creation of more opportunities in the sectors of education, health sector, research, human development and environmental conservation. It equally implies an increase in the per capita income of every citizen.

3. Development economics is a branch of economics that focuses on how to improve the economies of developing countries. Its major concern is the development of third world economies. Development in such countries is met by improving the basic amenities to promote the welfare of its citizen and to maintain a certain set standard of living for all its citizens. The sectors that should be improved according to the development economists are Health sector, education, employment, and inflation, domestic and international economic policies. This branch of economics is specially tailored to the developing country to help them transform into a prosperous nation through progressive economics.

Goldman: Why Europe will outperform

The ECB’s likely cuts come as the US Federal Reserve is widely expected to implement its first hike to its benchmark rate in nine years at its December meeting. That's likely to strengthen the dollar as it will increase expected returns in the US.

With US interest rates set to rise and Europe's likely headed lower, certain assets on the continent look like a good bet, Goldman Sachs said.

It’s staying overweight European equities and local-currency credit on a three-month basis to position for “tailwinds” from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the currency.

“We expect the ECB to ease further at the December meeting to counter downside risks to inflation,” Goldman said in a note Wednesday, forecasting the deposit rate to be lowered by 10 basis points to negative 30 basis points. It also expects the bank to extend its quantitative easing (QE) program through the end of the third quarter of 2017.

A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.

That’s likely to weaken the euro as funds flow out of the currency and toward assets offering better-than-negative returns.

The ECB’s likely cuts come as the US Federal Reserve is widely expected to implement its first hike to its benchmark rate in nine years at its December meeting. That’s likely to strengthen the dollar as it will increase expected returns in the US.

Historically, when European and US monetary policy diverged like this, “European equities have pretty consistently outperformed their US counterparts past the first Fed rate hike and the outperformance gets particularly pronounced after 12 months,” Goldman said.

There are certainly signs the ECB could step up its game. ECB President Mario Draghi has hinted that that the bank could look to ramp up or extend its 1 trillion euro (USD 1.1 trillion) quantitative easing program.

At the moment, the ECB purchases 60 billion euros worth of assets each month and has committed to doing so until at least September 2016.

The next monetary policy meeting and subsequent media conference with Draghi is set for December 3 in Frankfurt, when an announcement on expanded asset purchases is hotly anticipated.

It is also possible that the central bank might cut the interest rate on its deposit facility further into negative territory. The rate is currently negative 0.2 percent, meaning that private banks are effectively charged for parking money with the ECB.

The bank is underweight on US equities and bonds.

“A weaker euro is likely to serve as a strong catalyst for outperformance of European versus US equities,” it said.

Another factor that may help to boost the Europe over US play: positioning for the monetary policy divergence appears to be light so far, Goldman said, citing action in risk reversals, Goldman said.

It tips one of the most direct plays on the divergence between monetary policies in US and Europe is to just short the euro. Its 12-month forecast for the euro is for it to fetch USD 0.95, but that might be reached sooner if the ECB moves aggressively in December, Goldman said. The euro was fetching USD 1.0611 in early European trade Thursday.

9. Give a written translation of the following extracts from Russian into English:
