Edward Kennedy «Duke» Ellington (29. April 1899 – 24. Mai 1974) war ein amerikanischer Jazzpianist, Komponist und Leiter seines gleichnamigen Jazzorchesters von 1923 bis zu seinem Lebensende. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Washington, D.C., lebte Ellington seit Mitte der 1920er Jahre in New York City und wurde durch die Auftritte seines Orchesters im Cotton Club in Harlem landesweit bekannt.
