Mr. Waddington of Wyck

May Sinclair's 'Mr. Waddington of Wyck' begins by introducing us to Barbara Madden, who recently became the secretary and companion to the charming Fanny Waddington's husband, Horatio Bysshe Waddington. At Lower Wyck Manor, Barbara is drawn to Fanny's delicate butterfly movements and the warmth she brings to a room. But as she waits for Mr. Waddington's arrival, she can't help but feel anxious about how he will perceive her. As Fanny shows Barbara around, they discuss Horatio's portrait, and Barbara wonders how the husband of such an enchanting woman could be anything but interesting.
