About the book

'Twenty Years in Europe' is the memoir of Samuel H.M. Byers (1838 -1933), an American Civil War Hero who served under the famed General Sherman. He authored the famous poem «March to the Sea». Having declined a commission after the war to enter the regular army with a promotion, he was made the American Consul to Zurich. In his own words he writes, «It took me from a quiet little Western town to a beautiful Swiss city, where I was to spend many years of my life, and where I was to meet people, look on scenes and experience incidents worth telling about. And now it has led to my writing down the recollections of them in a book.» 'Twenty years in Europe' is the result of that effort.
