Jakob

Die Bibel erzählt von Jakob, Muttersöhnchen und Gottesstreiter, Flüchtling und Betrüger, Liebhaber und Familienvater. Er ist kein Heiliger und doch ist gerade er Israel – einer, der nicht das perfekte Vorbild ist, sondern einer wie du und ich, der sich aber gerade darum für jeden als Identifikationsfigur anbietet.

Als literarische Gestalt betrachtet wird der Werdegang Jakobs zu Israel anhand der biblischen Erzählung nachgezeichnet. Mit kurzen Seitenblicken auf die Frage nach der Historizität dieser Gestalt und auf ihre weit gefächerte Wirkung wird Jakob als einer dargestellt, der mitten im Leben steht und das, was das Leben ihm bietet, zu meistern versucht.

The Bible tells of Jacob, mother's boy and warrior of God, refugee and deceiver, lover and family man. He is no saint, and yet he is Israel – not a perfect model but a person on whose devious life lines God writes a straight text. Seen as a literary figure, Jacob's development to become Israel is traced along the biblical narrative. With brief excursions to the question of the historical value of this figure and to its broad reception Jacob is portrayed as a person who is full of life and who tries to master with God's help whatever life offers him.
