Why have numerous armies repeatedly clashed beneath the walls of Ukraine’s fortresses? Due to its location, Ukraine has been part of various states over the centuries (Kievan Rus’, Galicia-Volyn, and Moldavian principalities; the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires, among others), which largely determined the development of military and defensive architecture. When Sultan Osman II approved his plan to conquer Ukraine, Poland, and Central Europe, a fortress stood on the route to Galicia.

The flag, a symbol of the unification of the Ukrainian nation, is a rectangular panel of two equal horizontal stripes: the upper one is blue and the lower one is yellow.
