"Mollie's Substitute Husband" by Max McConn is a narrative of John Merriam. He is a 28-year-old high school principal coming from a small town located in Illinois. He attends a convention of school principals in Chicago and before returning back to his hometown, Merriam decides to enjoy some dinner at a cabaret. He never realizes how different this evening is going to be! A few people at the surrounding tables spot Merriam who mistake him for someone he is not. Merriam, on the other hand, spots a young lady whom he loved during the times when she was his student. He is still in love with the now-married lady, but does she spot him too?
