The book tells the story of the Doctor's return from the moon. It covers the lives of Tommy Stubbins, the Doctor's assistant, the family of animals in England waiting for his return, how the Doctor escaped from the moon, and the Doctor's desire to start a steady, simple silent life back on Earth.
