"Lights and Shadows in Confederate Prisons" details the life of union officers held as prisoners of war. The book is based on the experiences of a Captain of the 13th Connecticut Infantry Regiment in 1861. He was captured as a prisoner of war by the Confederate Army in 1864. After being released, he described the horrors of war and the heroism of his combatants in several books.
