The story unfolds with a man sitting on a bench in Madison Square in New York when an Eskimo dog comes up to him and begins to whine. The man is recently financially secure after receiving a legacy, and had just left his job as a clerk. The dog seems to want the man to follow it, and he does so, eventually coming to a dark building where the dog leads him to an open door. As the man enters the building, he finds a group of people huddled around a man who is dying. The man helps the group try to save the dying man, but ultimately he dies.
