When Don Pendleton's father dies, he leaves Don a house but no money. Don had always lived a lavish life so it was a shock for him to have no money even for food. He somehow manages to land a banking job that will pay him twelve hundred a year, but he's confident he can get promoted in a few months. Then starts Don's learning of real life and the shift in his perspective.
