Romaanis on kujutatud kahe sõbra elukäiku, mis alguses on õige sarnane – mõlemad noormehed lõpetavad ehitustehnikumi, pärast sõjakooli saavad Eesti armee ohvitserideks ja põgenevad koos 1941. aastal Punaarmeest tagasi Eestisse. Sõjakeerises satub üks neist üle mere Rootsi, teine jääb küll kodumaale, kuid peab end aastaid varjama, salgama eelnevat elukäiku, et mitte sattuda KGB kätte. Kuidas nende nii sarnaste meeste elu edaspidi kujuneb, sellele romaani sündmustik keskendubki.
