The tree

From deep in the earth, under the clear blue sky,

an old rustic tree, handsome and stout,

Living through time, thriving through rain

and sometimes drought.

With branches aloft and reaching up high,

drift with breeze, teasing the sky,

Proudly standing erect, to those seeking shelter,

a welcome place to fly.

With shape and a grace, surviving generations,

for all to admire,

To gaze at the bow, standing tall and free,

the pens of many to inspire.

Indifferent to problems and troubles

of man’s own making,

Oblivious to disease violence,

wars and hearts breaking.

Mystery and truth swaying in the breeze,

toing and froing, unsettling the leaves,

When the tree dies, leaving the blue sky above,

no need for sorrow no one grieves.

For more trees will grow and life will go on,

trees will continue to prosper and thrive,

Mankind will continue to kill and destroy,

hopes for a future, which it may never survive.

Growing up

Being raised in the country with nature to surround,

To look out of my window and see trees

and fields all around.

A family garden, of size to boast,

All kinds of flowers and fruits of the earth to care and host.

An awareness of nature was gifted to me, in all its worth,

Seeing life gently emerging from the mysterious earth.

Walking in fields and down treed country lanes,

Solitary thoughts to nurture growing brains.

A playground of hills to play and to roam,

To wander all day and forget to go home.

Thick bracken and strawberries as wild as can be,

In this rich playground to explore and see.

To fish in the rivers and mushrooms in the fields,

A life in the countryside with many pleasing yields.

Years have past but my heart reverts back,

To a time with no care and many memories to unpack.

The summer sun

Timelessly bold the spirit of summer,

warms the earth and sea all around,

Feeding and nourishing the life emerging

from the generous ground.

The summer sun lights up places and hearts over each land,

Wakes and shines each day as though obeying a command.

The summer is music and dancing for some,

Love, romance and weddings to come.

Others seek places special and unique

Be they Caribbean, Spanish or Greek.

If on earth, the sun is the father of all life,

The moon and the stars makes a beautiful wife.

The summer is coming but soon will be gone,

Long winter days to fondly recall, when the sun came,

and it brightly shone.

After

After the cold snow of winter bades farewell and parts,

Comes the feeling of new life and a new beginning starts.

Come the green shoots of springtime, the senses,

to overpower,

With every tree lined forest and every scented flower.

New born babes and those now old, sense spring in the air,

The hopes and promises of things to come,

of ending all anguish and despair.

Springtime birds sing springtime songs,

Each farmer knows where every harvest seed belongs.

It is the time when the earth wakes up

and celebrates without reserve,

When nature alone excels each year and never fails to serve.

Springtime comes each year to tell It’s story,

And fills the earth with much hope and glory.

Seasons

To feel the call of springtime

and to walk a country lane,

Feelings of joy in hedgerows, fields,

nurtured by falling springtime rain.

Birds on the branches high in trees,

sing sweetest springtime songs,

Sounds of hope for future,

everything in nature intact,

where it rightly so belongs.

The sea time of summer

and the oceans to explore,

Sunshine on the sand, salt air, calm seas,

shells like diamonds galore.

Summer flowers and summer rain fresh,

new and vital,

The call of the gulls accompanied by waves,

in unrehearsed recital.

Follows, the harvest,

which autumn safely gathers in,

Autumn trees and colours,

golden leaves a carpet,

no matter kith or kin.

The chill of autumn wind

reminds of days to come,

As the seasons rotate and reminds of cold

and fingers turning numb.

Winter chills and icy winds,

snowdrifts line the valleys,

Pine trees dressed in finest coats,

wind blown snow drives through streets and alleys.

The winter cold reminds of amazing stories old,

Are past down through the ages,

remembered well and to children, fondly told.
