Fa molts i molts anys, hi havia un llenyataire que tenia set fills, tots nens. El més petit i espavilat era tan alt com un polze, i per això li deien Polzet. La família cada cop era més pobra i no tenien prou menjar per a tots. Així va ser que el llenyataire va decidir dabandonar els fills. Un matí els va portar al bell mig del bosc, i els hi va deixar.
